The Ramsar Information Sheet on Wetlands of International Importance
The Information Sheet for Ramsar Wetlands (RIS), first adopted by the Parties in 1990, was designed to provide essential data on all designated Wetlands of International Importance, in order to allow analysis of Ramsar-listed wetlands around the world at any given time, provide baseline data for measuring changes in the ecological character of wetlands listed under the Ramsar Convention, and provide material for publications which inform the public about Ramsar sites. Completed RISs are only accepted from the officially-appointed "Administrative Authority" in each Contracting Party or member State. The RIS itself and its guidelines, as well as the Ramsar Criteria for Identifying Wetlands of International Importance, are undergoing constant review by the Convention's Secretariat and its subsidiary expert body, the Scientific and Technical Review Panel.
The latest version of the RIS and its Explanatory Note and Guidelines have been adopted by COP8 (Valencia, 2002) in Resolution VIII.13, with significant additions and changes adopted by COP (Kampala, 2005) in Resolution IX.1 Annex B. In Resolution
VI.13, the Parties committed themselves to providing updated RIS information
for all of their Ramsar sites no later than every six years or on the
occasion of any significant change in the sites' ecological character.
